News and Events

Making sure that you are updated with news and current events has become a necessity in the business world today, or in any other field you are in, for that matter. A lot of people include reading the newspaper, reading news websites for online news and watching local and world news shows in their daily routine. However, what is considered as news and current events?

News is basically any new information about current events that is distributed to a mass audience or a third party through various channels such as print, the Internet, television or radio broadcasting, or through word of mouth. Most news are investigated then presented by news journalists which would then be distributed to the various outlets through news agencies.

Generally speaking, news and current events articles provide information based on facts.
News should not be “editorialized”, meaning it should not contain the opinion of the news writer or reporter as doing so could discredit them as a journalist. News articles are usually structured to have the details of the who, the what, the when, the where, the why and the how.

However, not all news and current events are reported. The stories that have the greater news value for the readers are the ones which are published on newspapers and broadcasted on radio or television. The factors which determine the news value of information is determined by several factors called news determinants. Here are some of the news determinants.

1. How new the news is. News is easily perishable. As a certain piece of news ages, it also loses value. Readers usually want to know what is new now. Events that happened yesterday or this morning are more valuable and newsworthy compared to events that happened two days ago or last week. However, if old news has a new angle, disclosure or discovery, it would make it a timely story again. The closer the event is to the date when it will be published, the more news value it would have.

2. Prominence of the people or events involved. News about more prominent personalities such as politicians, celebrities and social leaders have more value than news about regular individuals. News about more important events are also more newsworthy.

3. Proximity of the news. News which is closer to the readers has more value compared to news that happened far away.

4. Effect or relevance of the news. News that directly affects or influences a bigger audience is more newsworthy compared to news that is only relevant to a smaller group of people.

5. Human interest. News which have more value are usually those that are about: an oddity, or something unusual or extraordinary; a conflict, or news about elections, sports or war; and emotion, or those stories that evoke certain emotions such as humor, sympathy and anger.

Today, keeping up-to-date on the latest news and events is easy because of the availability of the various media channels. You can get the most recent news from television or radio news broadcasts, online news websites, newspapers and other publications.
